In ancient Greece oranges were prized as food from the gods and were called golden apples. Originating in Sicily, it’s believed that blood oranges were a mutation, possibly of the tangelo and pomelo. Within Europe, the arancia rossa di Sicilia, or the red orange of Sicily, has Protected Geographical Status.
